Scott Curd begins his 3rd year as offensive line coach for the Hawks in 2023. Curd joined the Shorter University football staff in August of 2021.
The 2022 season saw the Hawks again make significant strides in the run game averaging 143.5 yards per game and 4.0 yards per carry-both marks being the highest since 2015. The Hawks rushed for 200+ yards in a game four times in the 2022 season which is the most in a season since 2015. Two of these occurred in Gulf South Conference games which represent the best performances in conference play since 2015. The Hawks have rushed for 200+ yards now six times in the past two seasons. The 2022 offensive line unit helped Justus Durant to lead the Hawks in rushing with 577 yards as a true freshman. This led all true freshmen in the Gulf South Conference in this area. The 2022 season was another season where the sacks given up number was reduced from 27 sacks in 2021 to 26 in 2022 while attempting 39 more passes in the 2022 season.
During the 2021 season the Hawks improved their rushing yards per game from 80.7 in 2019 (the last full season before Covid-19) to 141.1 yards per game. This improved the Hawks from 152nd to 88th in NCAA DII. This coincided with an improvement in yards per carry from 2.8 in 2019 to 3.6 yards per carry in 2021. Other highlights of the 2021 season include: the best single game team rushing output (287 yards) versus Erskine since 2015, the highest rushing total in a conference game (187 yards) versus Mississippi College since 2015, and first time having multiple 200+ yard rushing games in a season since 2015. The Hawks reduced their sacks given up from 31 in the 2019 season to 27 in 2021.
Prior to joining coach Morrison’s staff, he spent the previous 2 seasons as an offensive analyst/quality control coach with the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) helping with the offensive line under offensive line coach Richard Owens (who is now at the University of Louisville). While with UAB he was part of the 2020 Conference-USA champions and two western division titles. The 2020 UAB offensive line was 4th in the nation in fewest sacks given up giving up just 4 sacks in nine games and averaged 200 yards per game rushing.
Before joining the UAB staff in 2019 he coached in the high school ranks for 25 years in Alabama. His time included being offensive coordinator at Addison High School for the 2005 Class 1A state champions where his unit set a school record for most points in a season with 570. He concluded his high school career as head coach at his alma mater, Carbon Hill High School in Carbon Hill, Alabama. Before taking the helm Carbon Hill in 2016 the Bulldogs had won only in 10 games total since 2007 and had not won more than 2 games since that 2006. Coach Curd led the Bulldogs to 9 wins in his 3-year tenure including a 5-5 2018 campaign that equaled the most wins for the program since 2006. Included in the win total are 3 wins over playoff teams. Other high school coaching highlights include being offensive coordinator for Falkville High School where he helped the 1999 team win a first playoff game for the first time in school history.
Curd is a 1988 graduate of Carbon Hill (AL) High School and a graduate of the University of Montevallo where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1992 and his Master of Education degree in 1994.
Curd has been married to the former Freda Stidham for 28 years. They have 2 dogs (Edith and Stella) and a cat (Pilgrim) and reside in Hackleburg, Alabama.
